Sydney Uni Talk: Democracy and Welfare State Legacies: The Case of Jaap Bakema / May 23

Please join the School for a public guest lecture by Dirk van den Heuven, of TU Delft, Netherlands

Dirk van den Heuvel will talk about his research into post-war modern architecture, New Brutalism and Dutch Structuralism.

Dirk will probe the interrelations between mid-twentieth century nation-building, welfare state arrangements, housing and planning. He will do so by focusing on the work and ideas of the Dutch architect Jaap Bakema, who was one of the leading voices of Team 10. Together with his office Van den Broek and Bakema he was responsible for the most advanced urban design projects such as the Lijnbaan in Rotterdam and radical proposals for megastructure developments for Amsterdam, Skopje and Tel Aviv.
