Mad About Modernism is a day-long series of talks and tours celebrating all aspects of modernism.

On the day, enjoy self-guided tours of Rose Seidler House, experience internationally acclaimed artist, James Gulliver Hancock illustrating house objects or relax with a coffee in the grounds of one of the finest examples of mid-20th century modern domestic architecture in Australia.

Hear expert talks from guest curators and commentators exploring art, architecture, design and heritage.

Or extend the experience of the day with curated house tours to some of the wonderful modernist homes of the area.

Australian Modernist Architecture
10.30am – 11.30am

Professor Philip Goad is internationally known for his research and is an authority on modern Australian architecture. He has worked extensively as an architect, conservation consultant, and curator. Join him for a discussion on Australian modernist architecture.

Why People Hate Modernism: Tim Ross and Tone Wheeler
12pm – 1pm

Guest commentator Tim Ross presents a panel with Tone Wheeler exploring why people don’t like modernism.

‘From the inside and out’ – furniture creates the room and the room the facade
3pm – 4pm

Author and curator Karen McCartney will lead a panel with contemporary architects, interior designers and collectors looking at both the importance of both interior design and exterior design in the modernist aesthetic.

Harry and Penelope Seidler House

Designed by Harry and Penelope Seidler as their family home, the Harry and Penelope Seidler House could be regarded as their most important work.

The Jack House

Stepping inside the Jack House is like stepping onto the set of Mad Men. This is mid-century modernism at its best, right down to the groovy wallpaper and timber wall panelling.

General bus tour information

  • Please wear flat enclosed shoes on the tour
  • Buses will leave from the Rose Seidler House site
  • Unfortunately buses will not be held for latecomers and refunds will not be issued to anyone who misses the bus
  • Neither the site nor houses are wheelchair accessible
  • Participants must leave all bags with an SLM representative at the entrance to the house
  • No bathroom facilities are available to visitors inside the houses.
