KADOC kindly invites you to a special edition of its yearly series of seminars on religion, culture and society (since 1750). On December 8, three scholars will explore the history of religion in Australia and demonstrate its expressions in the architecture of religious buildings such as mosques and churches. Professor Katharine Massam (Divinity Melbourne), an expert on the history and lived experience of religion, will open the seminar with an introduction to the history of religion in Australia. Dr. Mizanur Rashid (Deakin), presently visiting scholar at KADOC, will then discuss the architecture of mosques in Australia’s Capital Territory, showing how architectural design shapes and expresses Muslim identity in multicultural Australia. Finally, Dr. Lisa Marie Daunt will present her new book Constructing Faith in the Antipodes. Modern Church Architecture in Queensland 1945–1977, published in the KADOC Artes series with Leuven University Press. This book offers a particular perspective on modernist church architecture, differing from accounts of buildings in the northern hemisphere, as it highlights how church architecture in Queensland was shaped by its very specific time and place – a young and developing state covering a vast area of land, sparsely populated, highly multi- denominational, and located in the antipodes.
