Without intervention at the upcoming local public consultation information session hosted by Banyule Council, the Chelsworth Park Pavilion currently leased to Ivanhoe Grammar School (IGS) and built in 1975 by Gunn Hayball is likely to be demolished.
A prime example for restoration, retrofit or adaptive re-use, IGS has confirmed that it will invest in the development of two new sports pavilions to replace the existing facilities at an estimated cost of $14 million in return for a longer-term lease – though they currenlty only use the facilities for 8% of total daylight hours. Banyule Council notes that without this contribution they would not be able to afford to update the facilities – though there have been little modifications or renovations on them to date regardless.

Professor Alan Pert (@nordpert), Deputy Dean of the Melbourne School of Design notes in discussions with original architect Graeme Gunn there is a known and motivated rationalisation for the need to retrofit and adaptively contemporise the facilities to comply with regulatory, legislative, ability and safety requirements – without needing to totally demolish the facility.
