About this event

Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Public Lecture:

While not thought of as ‘Melbourne’ architect John Andrews was responsible for several projects in the city. His Melbourne Convention Centre (originally known under the grand title of the World Congress Centre) was superseded less than 20 years after completion in 1990, while his staged design for the student union and library building at RMIT was completed by Edmond Corrigan in a design language radically different from Andrews’s. Other projects were more speculative: a medium-density housing project at South Bank, and extensions to the Flinders Street Railway Station.

In this lecture, Paul Walker will explore these projects in relation to the development of Andrews’s design strategies.

Walker is a professor of architecture at the University of Melbourne, editor and lead author of the book John Andrews: Architect of Uncommon Sense (Havard Design Press, 2023) and co-curator, with Kevin Liu, of the exhibition of the same name.
