Heritage Festival: Behind the Scenes of The Cremorne Orpheum Theatre / May 30

(source: facebook)

The Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace, affectionately known as ‘The Orpheum’, is a prized jewel in Sydney’s crown. For almost a century, this beautiful Art Deco theatre has opened its doors to theatre lovers of film and stage. Now The Orpheum footlights will shine directly on itself.

For one night only, Dr Ian Hoskins, North Sydney Council’s Historian, and Dr Peter Sheridan AM, an expert on Art Deco buildings, will take centre stage to showcase images and footage of the theatre’s history and architecture, as well as share stories and insights about its famous stars.

Learn about the original owner who had the vision to build the theatre and his renowned architect who brought his vision to life; hear how developers turned it into a shopping arcade and how Mike Walsh AM OBE brought it back to its former glory; and discover the action currently underway to have the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace listed on the State Heritage Register to help ensure this iconic theatre is preserved for future generations.

Hosted by the Cremorne Conservation Group.
