Evening with Dado
Tuesday 14 April, 6.30pm – 9.00pm (sold out)
Join us at Walsh Street for a screening of Schindler Space Architect (2024) directed by Valentina Ganeva.
Schindler Space Architect is the first feature-length documentary exploring the life and works of a pioneer of modern architecture, R. M. Schindler, narrated by Meryl Streep and Udo Kier, featuring renowned architects Frank Gehry, Steven Holl, Thom Mayne, among many others.
Austrian born and educated, Schindler changed forever the architectural landscape of Los Angeles and laid the foundation for what is now considered the California lifestyle of indoor-outdoor living. This documentary is an investigation into Schindler’s philosophy of Space Architecture and reexamines his complicated relationship with his mentor, Frank Lloyd Wright, and his former friend turned rival, Richard Neutra.
Schindler experimented and invented over a period of 30 years, with influences from the turn of the 20th century Vienna, the pueblos of Taos and the 20th century realities of Southern California. The film affirms the impact of emigre architects on modernism in America and the challenges artists face to stay true to their vision.
This event is generously supported by Konpira Maru Wines and Yumbo Soda.
Evenings with DADo offer an intimate commingling of film and dialogues centred around diverse historical and contemporary stories of architecture, design, landscape and urbanism. Feature-length films, documentaries, shorts and animations all find a home in Robin Boyd’s living room at Walsh Street. Guest speakers contribute unique perspectives on the various film subjects, kicking off the conversation in a home that decidedly sought to reject convention.
Thandi Lane, Andrew MacKinnon, Tom Hibbert and Jasper Caverly present DADo’s 2026 program.
